805 LACROSSE HAS EQUIPMENT THAT PLAYERS MAY BE ABLE TO BORROW OR RENT AND PREVIOUS LACROSSE EXPERIENCE IS NOT REQUIRED TO JOIN THE TEAM. PLEASE CONTACT COACH LEA IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE SHARKS FOR THE 2023-2024 SEASON!!

805 Lacrosse fielded our first boys’ high school team in the 2018 spring season. That was the first official lacrosse team from San Luis Obispo County to enter high school level competition. The 805 Sharks High School team competes in the Pacific Lacrosse League (PLL), against club teams based in Bakersfield, Camarillo, and throughout much of Southern California. The 805 Sharks are a club team and not an officially sanctioned CIF team representing a single high school, which means that boys attending any high school in San Luis Obispo County or northern Santa Barbara County (or home schooled) are eligible to compete.

The high school team is led by Coach Marc Lea, the former coach for the Cal Poly Mustangs Mens' Lacrosse program. In nearly twenty successful seasons with Cal Poly, Coach Lea helped the Mustangs earn five WCLL league titles, was named the WCLL Coach of the Year in four different seasons, and was awarded MCLA National Coach of the Year honors in 2012. Coach Lea is assisted by Dave Aguilar, who played lacrosse collegiately at UC Davis.

In our inaugural season, the team compiled an 8-4 record and earned a trip to the PLL playoffs. We also had 4 players chosen to the PLL All-Star Game. In 2019, the team had a challenging regular season but managed to squeak into the playoffs. In the first round, our young squad played their best game of the season and upset Camarillo 12 - 7 to earn the program's first playoff victory. That victory sent us to the PLL Final Four, where we narrowly lost in the semi-finals to the eventual league champion Vista Panthers. Our 2020 and 2021 seasons were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Sharks defeated the Bakersfield Rams for the programs' first ever PLL league title. Last year, we went undefeated and brought home our 2nd straight PLL league title.

The Pacific Lacrosse League provides an opportunity for non-CIF high school lacrosse teams to participate in competitive lacrosse.  Their website can be found here for more information http://www.plllacrosse.com/.  805 Lacrosse strongly supports establishing both boys and girls CIF sanctioned high school teams in San Luis Obispo County. As local participation in youth lacrosse increases, that shift to CIF will be proposed to our local high schools, but overall player numbers are not large enough to justify that move at the current time.

Practices for the high school team will begin in January 2024 and will be held in the late afternoon/early evening on weekdays and Saturdays during the pre-season. We typically practice 2- 3 days per week. Exact practice days and times are still to be determined. Practices will be held in San Luis Obispo to enable players from across SLO County and northern Santa Barbara County to participate and practice in a central location.

The 2024 game schedule is still being determined, but games will likely begin in mid-March and run through late May.

Registration costs for the 2024 high school season will be $275. Registration fees go toward league dues, referee costs, field rentals, goals, and other necessary equipment; costs have been set as low as possible and only go toward covering costs. All 805 Lacrosse coaches are volunteers. In addition to the 805 Lacrosse registration fees, all players must be current members of USA Lacrosse and provide their own lacrosse equipment, as well as cover any costs associated with traveling to away games. If there are players who are interested in playing but may not be able to afford the registration cost, please contact Coach Lea regarding payment plans or potential scholarships.

805 Lacrosse and our coaching staff are dedicated to teaching the game to anyone interested in learning. You do not need to have previous lacrosse playing experience to join our team. In addition, we are more than welcome to have interested players attend practice and develop basic skills prior to registering. We can provide you with an opportunity to learn the game before you decide if you want to join the team and pay the necessary registration fees. Contact us if you're interested in attending a practice or getting trained on basic lacrosse fundamentals.

***2022 RULE CHANGE WILL REQUIRE NEW SHOULDER PADS FOR ALL PLAYERS***

A new equipment rule will take effect on January 1, 2022 requiring boys shoulder pads to have additional protection and official NOCSAE certification. Very few existing shoulder pads meet this requirement, and most players will need to purchase new shoulder pads. The rule change was written to ensure adequate safety protection for players of all ages.
